11 Assignment of Benefits
Income and Employment Supports Act, section 16
INTENT
Employment Insurance claimants who do not have alternate resources to meet their basic needs may need to apply for Income Support (IS) benefits while waiting to receive their EI payments. The Assignment of Benefits (AOB) process allows Community and Social Services to recover IS benefits provided to a client while waiting for their EI benefits to start. A person “assigns” a portion of their EI benefit to Community and Social Services to repay IS benefits issued during a period of time when the person is eligible for EI. The purpose of the AOB process is to minimize dual EI and income support payments being paid to an individual for the same period.
